What is an access control system?

A physical access control system restricts and regulates entry to buildings, rooms, or other sensitive areas. When an individual approaches an access point, such as a door, they must provide their credentials for authentication – a key card, access badge, or biometric identification like fingerprints and facial recognition. The access control panel triggers the necessary actions to unlock a door, disable an alarm, or activate a turnstile.

Types of Access Control Systems

There are a variety of door access control systems available, each with unique features and capabilities.

Card-based Access Control Systems

Use radio frequency technology to identify and authenticate individuals. RFID tags or cards are attached to authorized users, and a reader is used to identify them and grant access.

Biometric Access Control Systems

Use biometric identifiers, such as fingerprints, iris scans, or facial recognition, to verify the identity of individuals. These systems are becoming increasingly popular due to their ability to provide highly secure authentication.

Keypad Access Control Systems

Use a combination of numbers or letters to grant access. They are typically used in residential or small commercial settings and are easy to install and use.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)

Use radio frequency technology to identify and authenticate individuals. RFID tags or cards are attached to authorized users, and a reader is used to identify them and grant access.
